Dan Roberts

Growing up in the bucolic scapes of New Zealand, photographer Dan Roberts was born into a creative family - processing the world through a cinematic lens was innate. His post-graduation emigration to Australia timed with the rise of street photography as a vibrant and novel vernacular. In pursuit of a greater exploratoration of the genre, Dan travelled to Europe and spent the next decade working for the biggest publications in the industry including US Vogue, and photographing major fashion events: from inside the Met Gala to Paris fashion week. It was a period of total immersion that resourced Dan to understand how to leverage creative control in pursuit of his singular vision.

Dan has since built a career delivering images unique for their considered elevation - where light, environment and atmosphere shape the narrative, and a cleaner beauty lives alongside rawer counterparts. We comprehend a tenderly constructed world where beauty arises from imperfection, and a clean elegance is underscored by a faint unease. A focus on the relationship between subject and backdrop is the crucible for this interplay between the sublime and the flawed: the use of directional light, considered framing and emotional connection exposes an underlying tension.

Dan's creative process balances preparation and instinct. He creates imagery which feels both controlled yet natural: presenting the viewer with an edified expression of the complexity of humanity and an enquiry into our constructed world.

Commercial clients include Aje, Country Road, Cotton On, Henne, July, Maggie Marilyn, Mecca, Oroton, RM Williams, Scanlan Theodore, Lululemon and more. Editorial clients include Elle Indonesia, Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, Side-Note, Tatler, WISH Magazine.
