As a child growing up in Seoul, Seung-Rok Baek’s shyness defined his way in the world. When he was asked to document the wedding of an acquaintance using a small point-and-shoot camera, the experience proved pivotal - photography gave the then teenager a bold new way of conversing and self-expression. Seung had found a calling, a passion and a language. He set about studying its intricacies and mastering its voice.
Seung’s eye naturally seeks minutiae: the exquisite, the quiet. Moving to Sydney and studying graphic design facilitated a new perspective on photography. An exactitude of angles and composition formed a counterpoint to a more fluid way of capturing his rapture for simple quotidian moments. While existing within the fashion genre, Seung's work represents the antithesis of all that is fleeting, flashy and head-turning, but instead captivates via an ability to weave a narrative which feels whispered. This is further informed by his dual cultural foundation: from the hectic complexity of life in Seoul, where he pursued technical perfection with an end goal of beautification; Seung’s move to Australia provided his lens with a breadth and an ease. In both his still life and fashion imagery, he captures precision and detail within a bigger evocative feeling, rich in layered texture: we lean in closer to understand the story beneath.
Seung’s clients include Lee Matthews, Dinosaur Designs, Calvin Klein, RM Williams, David Jones, Marle, Arts Matter, Saint Velentine, Kathmandu and more.
